HistoryBy 1953, local citizens took action to get provincial approval for the Corporation of the Town of Ajax, which became part of Durham Region in 1974. The town took its name from the ship HMS Ajax, one of three ships that engaged the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee at the Battle of the River Plate, off the coast of Uruguay in WWI.
