History
During the Second World War, the Ajax part of the Township of Pickering was the location of a Defence Industries Limited shell plant, which by 1945 had completed 40 million shells and employed 9,000 people. After the War ended, the University of Toronto leased much of the D.I.L. plant as student housing for former soldiers enrolling as engineering students. By 1949, the last year of the University of Toronto, Ajax Campus, some 7000 engineering students had received their education here. By 1953, local citizens took action to get provincial approval for the Corporation of the Town of Ajax, which became part of Durham Region in 1974. The town took its name from the ship HMS Ajax, one of three ships that engaged the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee at the Battle of the River Plate, off the coast of Uruguay in WWI.
