Introduction

Durham Region Transit is a regional organization which runs the buses.

To use transit you must pay a fare with exact change, tickets, bought in books of ten, or show a monthly bus pass.

Effective July 1, 2014

GO Train co- fares at regular fare + 65 cents.

CNIB clients (with a current registered CNIB card) ride conventional DRT and GO Bus free of charge in Durham Region. The CNIB free fare does not apply to Specialized Services. Attendants pay full fare on conventional and Specialized Services.

Full time Durham College, UOIT and Trent students have the U-Pass included in student tuition for travel on DRT Bus and GO Bus anywhere within Durham Region.

Hours of Service
Major bus routes run from 5:30am to 12:20am, with a daytime frequency every 20 -30 minutes. Some routes, serving industrial areas, operate only weekdays during morning and afternoon rush hours.

Lost articles are returned to the West, Centre, East or North Customer Service Centres, depending on the area where the article was found. Often, lost article can be picked up the same day.

Dogs and cats are not normally allowed on DRT buses. However, exceptions are made for working dogs (seeing eye, hearing and special assist dogs), dogs on a leash with muzzle and dogs or cats or other small animals confined in a pet transportation crate.

Wearing inline skates or skateboarding on DRT buses is not allowed. Passengers will be asked to carry skates and roller blades in the hand rather than over the shoulder for safety reasons.

Access for Persons with Limited Mobility
Some of the buses and routes s have low floor buses that can "kneel" though not all stops can accommodate handicapped riders.

Durham Region Transit (DRT) Specialized Services provides transportation for eligible disabled residents of Durham Region, with either a temporary or permanent eligibility. The Fares are $2.75 per trip, throughout Durham Region. One attendant may accompany a client, paying full fare, and should book their ride at the same time as the disabled passenger. Call Customer Service (in Whitby) 905-668-7711 Monday to Saturday 6:00am - 12:00pm, Sunday & Holidays 8:00am - 10:00pm (call dispatcher or check our web site to confirm specific holiday service).
Contracted taxis (accessible vans and sedans) are used regularly to support DRT Specialized Services, usually in the following circumstances:

  • During peak periods to ensure customer delays are minimized.
  • After 6:00pm on weekdays.
  • During weekends and holidays.
  • To attend a medical appointment in Durham Region.
  • In an emergency situation.

DRT Dispatchers must arrange all contracted taxi bookings.

GO Transit Integration
GO Bus in Oshawa The Durham Region Transit (DRT) integrates GO Transit services to improve travel within Durham Region, without paying a second fare. Customers travelling on Durham Region Transit buses may board GO Transit buses with a pre-paid DRT ticket, pass or transfer. Customers must provide proof of a DRT fare in advance or pay the regular GO Transit cash fare. Those paying cash fares on DRT must ask for a transfer, as proof they paid the DRT fare.

Regular GO fares apply for travel that extends outside of Durham Region and for customers paying with cash.

GO Buses accept pre-paid DRT ticket, multi-ride, monthly passes or DRT transfers for adults, students, seniors and children on the following routes:

  • Oshawa Hwy 2 GO Bus Service
  • Port Perry GO Bus Service: Beaverton to Whitby
  • Hwy 407 East GO Bus Service: Durham College/UOIT to Brougham
  • Lakeshore East GO BUS Service connecting with trains: Oshawa to Newcastle
  • Lakeshore East GO Bus service connecting with WEEKEND trains: Oshawa to Newcastle
  • Stouffville-Uxbridge GO Bus Service: Uxbridge to Goodwood

DRT Co-Fare program

Customers can also take advantage of the DRT Co-Fare program, which applies to and from the GO Rail Stations for travel in the local station area for:

  • GO Train to DRT bus at GO Rail stations only
  • DRT bus for travel to GO Train stations
  • GO Bus to local bus and local bus to GO Bus at GO Rail stations only
GO Train at Ajax

The Co-Fare program allows customers connecting with GO Trains and GO Buses at Rouge Hill, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa GO Stations to use DRT for travel within the local service area at a reduced fare and is available in cash, 10 ride tickets and monthly Co-Fare passes. Customers must have a valid GO ticket or pass to use the DRT Co-Fare program. Co-Fare is not accepted on GO Bus.

For example, Co-Fare is only valid for passengers traveling to / from the Oshawa GO Train station during times that DRT is servicing the train station. At all times a valid monthly GO pass or ticket must be shown to qualify for the Co-Fare.

Passengers with GO Bus tickets, paying regular GO Bus fares, are not valid for transfer to DRT buses.

Peterborough Transit

Introduction

Peterborough Transit provides services 7 days per week and late evening services Monday through Saturday. Transit does not operate on December 25th, December 26th or January 1st.

Trent University
Services to Trent University are provided 7 days a week during the normal school year from the beginning of September through to the end of April. The schedule changes with events during the school year such as holiday breaks and exams.
